HubSpot attribution models for B2B: which to use and what the reports miss
HubSpot attribution reporting offers nine models: linear, first interaction, last interaction, U-shaped, W-shaped, time decay, full path, J-shaped and inverse J-shaped. Contact create reports need Marketing Hub or Content Hub Professional; deal create and revenue attribution reports need Marketing Hub Enterprise. For long B2B cycles, a deal-level model such as W-shaped or full path is a sensible starting view, compared against first and last interaction. No model is the truth. Use them as directional views, check them against closed-won revenue and add self-reported attribution for what the tracking cannot see.
Key takeaways
- Contact create, deal create and revenue attribution are three different report types, and the last two require Marketing Hub Enterprise.
- W-shaped works only in deal create and revenue reports, and full path only in revenue reports.
- Revenue reports count only closed-won deals with an associated contact and values in Amount, Create date and Close date.
- HubSpot samples up to 100,000 associations or activities per deal, so repeated low-impact touches can drop out of drilldowns.
- Run two or three models side by side, reconcile to closed-won, and treat the gap between them as the uncertainty in your reporting.
The three report types
Contact create attribution measures which interactions led to new contacts. Deal create attribution measures which led to new deals. Revenue attribution measures which led to won revenue, using the deal's Amount property. According to HubSpot, attribution reports center on contacts and deals, with company available as a dimension.
Availability follows the plan. Attribution reporting is available with Marketing Hub or Content Hub at Professional or Enterprise. Deal create and revenue attribution reports require Marketing Hub Enterprise.
The nine models and their weights
| Model | How credit is split | Where it is available |
|---|---|---|
| First interaction | 100% to the first interaction | All report types |
| Last interaction | 100% to the last interaction | All report types |
| Linear | Equal credit to every interaction | All report types |
| U-shaped | 40% first interaction, 40% lead conversion, 20% split across the rest | All report types |
| W-shaped | 30% first interaction, 30% contact creation, 30% deal creation, 10% split across the rest | Deal create and revenue only |
| Time decay | More credit to recent interactions, with a 7-day half-life | All report types |
| Full path | 22.5% each to first interaction, lead creation, deal creation and last interaction, 10% across the middle | Revenue only |
| J-shaped | 20% first interaction, 60% conversion, 20% split across the rest | All report types |
| Inverse J-shaped | 60% first interaction, 20% conversion, 20% split across the rest | All report types |
In HubSpot's wording, "lead" in these reports means the contact, not the lead object. W-shaped and full path return null results if a deal's create date is earlier than the create dates of its associated contacts, which happens when deals are created before contacts are linked.
What HubSpot can and cannot see
HubSpot attributes these touchpoints: ad clicks (with connected ad accounts), marketing event registration and attendance, connected calls logged to the contact, CTA clicks, form submissions, marketing email clicks, page views (with the tracking code) and social post clicks (with connected social accounts). Each interaction is counted separately, so repeated clicks or views each add credit.
Several caveats matter for enterprise reporting. Email clicks are attributed only when sent to the primary email address. Sales calls, meetings, conversations and one-to-one emails count only when associated with both the contact and the deal, and unanswered one-to-one emails are excluded. Pages not hosted in HubSpot are credited to "Pages without asset type" by default. Up to 100,000 associations or activities per deal are included, and lower-impact interactions such as repeated page views may be left out of drilldowns.
None of these tools captures the conversations that happen in private channels, communities or AI assistants. That is why we pair modeled attribution with self-reported attribution.
Which model to start with
- Short cycle, few touches: first and last interaction are easy to explain and often enough.
- Long enterprise cycle with a buying committee: start with W-shaped for deal views and full path for revenue, because they credit the moments you can influence, including the first touch, contact creation and deal creation.
- Content and thought leadership programs: look at linear alongside first interaction, so early education is not erased by last-touch.
- Short promotional windows: time decay, with its 7-day half-life, favors recent touches and suits time-boxed offers.
- Always compare: when two models disagree about a channel, that channel's value is uncertain, and the right response is a test, not an argument.
Make the reports trustworthy before you read them
- Define lifecycle stages once and document the entry and exit criteria, so contact create and deal create mean the same thing across teams.
- Create deals with the buying committee attached. A deal with no associated contact returns nothing in revenue attribution.
- Install the tracking code on every page and domain you own, and assign content types to externally hosted pages.
- Connect ad accounts so ad clicks are attributed, and govern UTMs so channels are named the same way everywhere.
- Check the revenue report requirements: closed-won stage, at least one associated contact, and values in Amount, Create date and Close date.
- Reconcile once a month: total attributed revenue should match closed-won revenue in finance reporting, and any gap should have a known cause.
Frequently asked questions
Which HubSpot attribution model is best for B2B?
There is no single best model. For long enterprise cycles, W-shaped (deal create and revenue reports) and full path (revenue reports) credit the milestones you can influence. Compare them with first and last interaction, and treat disagreement as uncertainty.
Do I need Marketing Hub Enterprise for attribution?
Contact create attribution is available with Marketing Hub or Content Hub Professional or Enterprise. Deal create and revenue attribution reports require Marketing Hub Enterprise, per HubSpot's documentation.
Why is my revenue attribution report empty or low?
Common causes: deals are not closed-won, have no associated contact, or are missing Amount, Create date or Close date. W-shaped and full path also return null if a deal was created before its contacts.
Does HubSpot attribution include offline and dark funnel activity?
Only what is logged. Connected calls count when logged to the contact, and sales activities count when associated with the contact and the deal. Private conversations are invisible, so add a self-reported source field on forms.
