HubSpot ABM and buyer intent: what it covers, what it costs and how to turn signals into meetings
HubSpot now includes account-based marketing tools and buyer intent inside the CRM. ABM tools add a target account flag, ideal customer profile tiers, buying roles, segments and LinkedIn audiences. Buyer intent adds visitor intent, third-party research intent, company news, custom signals and Bombora-powered Company Surge, shown on company records and usable in segments, workflows and scoring. For many B2B teams that covers the core of an ABM program without a separate platform. The work that decides the outcome is the account model, the signal rules and the follow-up that happens when a signal fires.
Key takeaways
- HubSpot ABM tools need Marketing Hub and Sales Hub at Professional or Enterprise; buyer intent is available on several hubs and most features use HubSpot Credits.
- Buyer intent covers four signal families: visitor intent, research intent, company news and contact-level signals, plus Company Surge (up to 12 Bombora topics).
- Tracking a company is a recurring monthly credit charge, so decide which accounts earn tracking before you switch it on.
- Signals only create pipeline when each one has an owner, a response time and a play. Build those before you buy more credits.
- HubSpot marks the Buyer Intent tool as beta in its documentation, so confirm current features and limits before you commit a budget.
What HubSpot added, in plain terms
There are two separate pieces. The first is HubSpot's ABM tools: a Target account checkbox and an Ideal customer profile tier (Tier 1 to Tier 3) on companies, a Buying role property on contacts, a target accounts home that recommends companies to pursue, an account overview that shows activity, contacts, deals and tracked page views, and auto-created segments you can sync to LinkedIn as company audiences.
The second is buyer intent, a tool under Marketing that identifies companies meeting your intent criteria. HubSpot matches website visits to companies through its tracking code, and layers on research activity from across the web, company news and contact-level signals. Results appear on a Buyer Intent card on the company record and in saved views, segments and workflows.
Together they give a team an account model, a way to see which accounts are active, and a way to act on it, all in the CRM that already holds contacts, deals and revenue.
The signals, and what each one tells you
| Signal | What it tells you | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor intent | A company met criteria you set based on pages visited on your site, such as pricing or a comparison page | Alerts to the account owner, sales follow-up, remarketing segments |
| Research intent | A company is researching topics you configured across third-party sites | Early-stage nurture, ad audiences, prioritizing outreach |
| Company news | Funding, executive hires, layoffs, product launches or mergers | Timing for personalized outreach and executive plays |
| Custom signals | Signals you describe in plain language, with cited sources, plus signals drawn from deal emails, notes and call transcripts | Segments, workflows, lead scoring and reporting |
| Company Surge | A tracked company's research on your Bombora topics spiked; each event shows topic, research level and top metros | Scoring, workflows, personalization tokens and custom reports |
| Contact-level signals | Job changes and email bounces for people in your CRM | Data hygiene, re-engaging champions who changed company |
Company Surge draws on Bombora's B2B Data Co-op and does not need a Bombora account. HubSpot auto-selects up to 12 topics from your website the first time you open Buyer Intent, and signals fire only for configured topics, so review the list rather than accepting it blind.
Custom signals and the newer company news, Key Stakeholder Identified and Pain Point Mention signals were listed in HubSpot's June 2026 product updates for customers with HubSpot Credits.
What you need and what it costs
Plans: according to HubSpot's documentation, ABM tools need Marketing Hub and Sales Hub at Professional or Enterprise, and viewing an account overview needs a Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise seat. Buyer intent is available on Starter, Professional or Enterprise for several hubs, and signal-based lead scoring needs Marketing Hub or Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise.
Credits: most buyer intent features use HubSpot Credits. Tracking a company for intent signals is a recurring monthly credit charge. Adding a company to the CRM from the Visitors or Research tab is a one-time charge. Viewing more than 20 companies per view also needs credits. HubSpot states that Company Surge carries no per-signal fee beyond the existing per-company tracking cost.
We do not quote credit prices here because they change. Check HubSpot's product and services catalog, then model the monthly cost as the number of tracked companies times the credit rate. That one number is the budget you are really approving.
A 30-day plan to go from switched on to meetings
- Week 1, account model: agree the target account list with sales, set Target account and ICP tier on every company (a workflow can set tiers from annual revenue, industry and country), and assign buying roles on the contacts you already know.
- Week 1, tracking: confirm the HubSpot tracking code is on every domain you own, including externally hosted pages, so visits roll up to companies.
- Week 2, signals: define two or three visitor intent criteria tied to real buying behavior (pricing, comparison and demo pages, repeat visits), choose research topics and review the Company Surge topic list.
- Week 2, tracking budget: auto-add and track only companies that match your ICP tiers, and exclude your own company, partners and competitors.
- Week 3, response: for each signal, write the owner, the response time and the play. A Tier 1 pricing-page visit might alert the account owner in Slack within the hour; a Tier 3 research spike might only enter a nurture program.
- Week 3, activation: sync target account segments to LinkedIn as company audiences, and enroll signal-matching companies in workflows.
- Week 4, reporting: build the ABM dashboard and a report from signal to meeting to opportunity so you can see which signals produce pipeline and which only produce noise.
Where a dedicated ABM platform may still fit
HubSpot's version is built into the CRM, which is its advantage: one data model, one set of permissions and one place where revenue is reported. A dedicated platform such as Demandbase or 6sense is a separate system that you integrate with the CRM. Teams usually look at one when they need heavier advertising orchestration, very large account universes or modeling that goes beyond the signals above.
Those are questions to test in a demo, not conclusions to assume. Ask each vendor to show the exact use case you have: your account count, your channels, your sales alerts and how the result is reported back to the CRM. We are a Demandbase partner and have implemented 6sense for large enterprises, so our recommendation follows your data and team, not a platform. Our comparison page sets the two approaches side by side.
Turn signals into leads and meetings
- Route by account owner, not by a shared queue: a signal on a named account should alert the person who owns it.
- Set a response time per tier and report on it. A signal that waits three days is a missed signal.
- Match the first message to the signal. A comparison-page visit gets a comparison answer, not a generic demo request.
- Feed outcomes back: tag which signals preceded meetings and which did not, then retire the weak ones and keep the credits on the strong ones.
- Keep consent in mind: company-level identification differs from contact-level tracking, and Canadian and European rules apply to how contacts are tracked and contacted.
Frequently asked questions
Can HubSpot replace Demandbase or 6sense?
For some teams, yes. HubSpot's ABM tools and buyer intent cover target accounts, intent signals, segments and LinkedIn audiences inside the CRM. Teams with very large account universes, heavy advertising orchestration needs or modeling requirements may still prefer a dedicated platform. Test your own use case in each demo.
Which HubSpot plan do I need for ABM?
Per HubSpot's documentation, ABM tools need Marketing Hub and Sales Hub at Professional or Enterprise, with a Sales Hub seat to view the account overview. Buyer intent is available on Starter, Professional or Enterprise for several hubs, and most features use HubSpot Credits.
What does buyer intent cost?
It uses HubSpot Credits. Tracking a company is a recurring monthly charge and adding a company to the CRM from the Visitors or Research tab is a one-time charge. Check HubSpot's catalog for current credit pricing before you plan a budget.
Is the Buyer Intent tool final?
HubSpot's documentation marked the tool as beta when we last checked, on October 30, 2026. Features, limits and pricing can change, so confirm the current state before you commit a budget.
How is HubSpot visitor identification different from a dedicated platform?
HubSpot matches website visits to companies through its tracking code and states that it uses reverse-IP lookup. Matching rates vary by audience and geography, so measure how many of your real visitors resolve to a company before you build a plan on it.
